1999 Archive – Video’s, Plans etc

1999 LogoThe 1999 ‘Blockley Millennium Mystery Play’ was a community play spearheaded by a committee of local Blockley parishioners led by Brian Oliver, Margaret Oliver and Jeremy Bourne. The production was directed by writer, director and tv actor Chris Jury, best known for his portrayal of Eric Catchpole in the BBC’s Lovejoy.

It became a major event for the Millennium Celebrations in the Cotswolds and featured on the BBC programme Songs of Praise.

Blockley Parpublic-domain-main09ish Church in the North Cotswolds was the venue for this ambitious production of the medieval mystery plays and was staged in the last days of 1999.

The team produced a version of the Coventry Mystery Plays. These medieval guild plays tell the story of Christ’s life from the nativity through to the crucifixion and resurrection. The plays were presented as a platform performance. The interior of St. Peter & St. Paul’s Church in Blockley was transformed by the removal of the pews and the building of a lighting tower and three stages – all without disrupting the normal Christmas celebrations and services.mystery play 4

The shows were completely sold out and a great critical success but more importantly they generated the sort of community spirit that is rare in this day and age and which was a privilege to be a part of. The video’s below hope to give the viewer just a hint of what that was like.
